I finally made a Maddie Make-Up Bag for myself, except it’s not for make-up. It’s for all the paraphernalia that comes along with clear aligners for straightening your teeth. Who knew?
In my wonderful kit, I have toothpaste, toothbrush, whitener foam, floss, ortho wax, chewies, hair tie, tray case, gauze, and the Pultool, with tons of room to spare.
*A note about the pattern: Originally sold on Bluprint, the company shut down in the fall of 2020 and was acquired by TN Marketing, which has taken up the torch as far as classes go on craftsy.com. I’m not totally sure what their plans are for offering patterns that Bluprint used to carry. All I know is they plan sometime in the future to make available to users any patterns they’ve previously purchased from Bluprint. You can try a google search for the Maddie Make-Up Bag, but I took a quick glance I think it might take some digging—if you find it at all.
About the Pattern
I reviewed the pattern when I made this bag the first time.
What I Did Differently
- Used fusible fleece instead of fusible “batting.” (These might be the same thing, but I’m no batting expert.)
- Didn’t have a regular zipper so I used an invisible one as though it was a regular zip.
- Added sheerweight fusible interfacing to the straps
- Added some elastic loops along the flap pocket.
- Cut a 3″ piece of elastic
- Folded over one end by 0.25″ and anchored with Wonder Tape
- Marked each loop 1″ apart
- Folded over and anchored the remaining end with Wonder Tape
- Sewed the elastic on before sewing the flap pocket to the flap backing
- Aligned the handles just inside the outer velcro
- Anchored the handles with some decorative stitches beginning 1.25″ up from the raw bottom edge and stopped at the velcro. Yes, this meant sewing through one of the pockets on the flap, but it’s the pocket nearest the zip case so I was okay sacrificing that one since the case blocks it when rolled open anyway.
Notes
- Anchoring the handles doesn’t seem to do much; they’re still pretty floppy. So while the flap is a nice idea—especially for it’s original purpose to store make-up brushes—a bag without a flap and handles sewn up either side seems more appealing for an aligner kit. And then maybe some small inner pockets on each side of the lining inside the bag.
