An Attempted Shrug Replica Using the Free Uvita Top

Sooooo it turned out way more crop top and way less shrug, but I still like it. It’s quite nice to lounge around in.

Here was my inspo.

Way different vibe, right? But I at least have the starting point to mod my way closer to this.

About the Patterns

Uvita Top // Itch to Stitch

This free pattern has been sitting in my stash since I started sewing. I was drawn to this as the base for this project because of the dropped shoulders, simple neckline, and simple shapes.

Itch to Stitch is very thorough on pattern instructions and I always appreciate illustrations over photos. Sometimes there are what I would call superfluous steps, but it’s nowhere near the eye-gouging experience of Simplicity patterns or Viki Sews. It’s easy for me to recognize the shortcuts I can take on an Itch to Stitch pattern.

Thumbhole Cuffs // Sinclair Patterns

I do love this add-on pack of Thumbhole Cuffs from Sinclair Patterns: five super-fun styles that you can mash onto any other sleeve.

What I do not love are the instructions. I’ve complained about Sinclair instructions several times in the past, so I knew to expect all the eyerollyness I experienced when pulling this out of my drawer again. Without the photos, there is no possible way you would end up with a thumbhole cuff. The written instructions are that bad. The finished product though: ♥

About This Make

  • Uvita: size 2
  • cuffs: Birch, size 8

What I Did Differently

  • Cropped the bodice at the waistline.
  • Drafted my own hem band, cut at 34.5″ x 4.5″
  • Mushed Sinclair Patterns Birch Thumbhole Cuffs onto the sleeves.
  • Drafted my own scarf, cut at 56″ x 7.5″
  • Added a loop to the back neckline to feed the scarf through to keep it in place.
  • Basted the cuffs using my usual lightning stitch at 1/4″ seam allowance (vs. the instructed 1/6″. PaHAH!)
  • Attached the cuffs using my serger at 1/2″ seam allowance.

Notes for Next Time

  • Convert to dolman sleeve, and I mean hardcore dolman sleeve. I want no distinguishable division between sleeve and bodice.
  • Maybe do some kind of boat-neck cowl?
  • Lengthen bodice enough to hem and consider tapering inward for less ease around the waist.
  • Cuffs are perfect. Depending on my main fabric choice, could be fun to colorblock the outer piece of the cuff.
