George and Ginger Twisty Top

I thought this top had a nice casual chic vibe, so I snatched the pattern from G+G’s retired pattern vault when it was open this past March for a few days. Tucked it into my pattern drawers until inspiration struck with this loose weave sweater knit.

About the Fabric

Muted Multi Stripe Knitted Hacci Sweater Knit Fabric from Girl Charlee Fabrics

  • Content: Cotton Rayon Blend
  • Weight: 8.5 oz, Light to Mid Weight
  • Stretch: 50%, 25%
  • Width: 52-55″

I snagged 4 yards of this cute stripey knit during Girl Charlee’s closeout sale. It’s never nice to see someone go out of business, but it IS nice to get fabric for $2.50/yard. I’m not a huge fan of horizontal stripes, but I love these colors!!! And you can hardly make a bad fabric choice at that price. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to make out of it when I got it, but the Twisty Top eventually crammed itself into my idea box and here we are!

I also have some other cute ideas for this on my Trello board which will involve some self-drafting.

It’s a very drapey fabric with a very loose weave. This is not going to keep anyone very warm in a stiff breeze, but as I took photos today, I was surprisingly comfortable even in the shade. With a less gappy garment, I think this fabric has the potential to be deceptively cozy.

About the Pattern

George and Ginger: Twisty Top (Retired)

What’s fun about this top is that you can wear the twisty bit in the back OR the front. I personally prefer it in the front; I don’t love the shapeless, boring front as the front.

Instructions were clear and easy to follow, which is good since I felt like the twisty bit had all kinds of potential to go sideways. I’m a little surprised I didn’t mess it up at first. But G+G’s illustrated artwork is always super helpful in orienting pattern pieces through confusing steps.

About This Make

  • size 6
  • long sleeves

The front as the front isn’t my favorite.

What I Did Differently

  • Drafted some small cuffs to finish the sleeves. Cut at 6.5″ wide by 4.5″ tall for final cuffs at 6″x2″.
  • Applied knit interfacing to the back strap.

Notes for Next Time

  • Do I want to shorten the back strap? Or lengthen the shoulder seams? I feel like it needs something to keep it from teetering on the edge of my shoulders. Maybe it’s a matter of sizing down to size 4?
