I Accidentally Sliced My Sewing Project; Now What?

It’s one of the dreaded whoopses, that moment you want to kick yourself because you knew you should have double checked that thing you didn’t double-check before plowing ahead, and now your sewing fun has come to a screeching halt.

Been there, my friend. Just tonight, to be exact.

I’m working on my first Sew Together bag, and finding it much easier than I anticipated. (I had heard the included instructions were not very thorough, but I’m finding them to be pretty accurate and concise. I started out supplementing them with the Quilt Barn guide, and while all the photos there are helpful, I’m not digging that guide. It might be great for a total beginner, though. I think all the details get in the way of my own ever-growing style and preferences.)

Anyway, on the step where I was trimming the seam allowance along the bottom of the pockets, I got to the last pocket, and was on a pretty good roll. So as I laid it flat to trim with my rotary cutter, a little voice in my head said “Make sure you have all the layers you don’t want to cut out of the way.”

Pffft, little voice. I’m fiiiine!

Sllllllice!

I was not fine.

I had sliced a little sliver out of the bottom of one of the in-between compartments.

Hm. I wouldn’t completely die if I just sewed a seam there…  But if I trash the little sliver, things are going to get cockeyed. So the weird seam idea is out the window.

What if…

Fusible Interfacing

Fusing interfacing is essentially like gluing another layer of fabric underneath – kind of like pasting scraps of paper together on a background. And I’m swimming in leftover tiny bits.

So that’s what I did. Took a little strip of fusible interfacing and fused it to the back. The sliver is now locked in place, and from the right side, it’s hardly noticeable. It also helps that it happens to be located in this deep, dark corner. For extra insurance, I think I’ll go get some anti-fray sealant to keep the woven fabric from fraying on the right side.

And voila! Onward with the making of the exterior in which I intend to wipe out a lot of my scraps with some kind of piecemeal quilty thing.
