Sewing the Luma Wrap Skirt with Suede Knit

Behold my first Daria Patterns…pattern. I’ve been wanting to try one of her patterns for a long time, but I guess my typical fabric choices just never really lined up with one of her patterns in my head. Until now.

About the Fabric

Brown, Heavy Scuba Knit Faux Suede from Boho Fabrics

  • Contents: Polyester/Spandex
  • Weight: 14 oz
  • Width of Fabric: 60″
  • Horizontal Stretch: 50%
  • Vertical Stretch: 25%

I bought this about two years ago and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since, waiting for the right project. I’ve been picturing it as some sort of mini skirt for a while. Even though it’s on the heavier side, it drapes really well, and it has great recovery. The suede texture is only on the face and is so soft and supple. Really a beautiful fabric.

Other than the face of the fabric being a bit grabby on my machine, it sews well and presses well enough to work with. Topstitching was a must for a refined finish, though.

About the Pattern

  • Size 6
  • Closures: button and snap

The aesthetic of the instructions is nice: clean and easy enough to follow. The wording wasn’t always super understandable, though. The video became vital for figuring out what I was looking at in some illustrations.

As far as the fit, it’s spot on, and I can see myself making this again.

What I Did Differently

  • I used ZERO interfacing. Wasn’t necessary with the weight of this fabric.
  • I skipped the ribbons for hanging.
  • Did not finish any raw edges on the facing or hem. Unnecessary on this fabric since it’s knit and will not unravel.

Notes for Next Time

  • What if I made it sit higher toward my waist? I may have to lengthen it, then.
  • Attach the snap a little higher for anchoring the belt.
  • Try a woven fabric.
  • Don’t sew the hem until near the end. (I ended up having to unpick the top portion of the hem along both sides of the skirt to attach the facing. Oops.)
