You’d think sewing squares would be old hat for me by now, but turns out, a picture-perfect straight edge is still a work in progress. As is hand-sewing a ladder stitch. (I think my book is slightly full of crap saying to make the stitches 1/4″ of an inch long. It looks sloppy and gappy with such long stitches. So I’ve started to make them smaller, and it looks nicer.)
I experimented with some fabric other than cotton here. The gray is polyester, and the pattern is some dry-clean-only upholstery type stuff that really got all over the place. But I wanted to make a fancy side and a “cheap” side, so I essentially have 2 sets of placemats in one now. I also did not use any interfacing although I bought some to go with this. I thought the weight of the fancy side would be enough on its own; turns out it is. I’m satisfied with it at least.
The book project for this involved applique, but I couldn’t really envision it for these, so I skipped it. Also, I wasn’t sure how these non-cotton fabrics would take to fusible web so I’m saving that for another day, too. And I made 6 of them… I kind of wanted to move on from it so I could start my boxes.
Which I have.
And I shall wax poetic on the failures of the DIY fabric box tutorial I’ve followed thus far.
